The Fake "Microsoft" Virus Warning

A screaming full-screen popup says you're infected and to call "Microsoft" now. The only virus is the phone number. This scam empties retirement accounts.

THE ONE RULE

No real virus warning ever includes a phone number. Microsoft will never call you.

Real security software doesn't tell you to call anyone. Microsoft doesn't know or care what's on your PC and will never call you or ask you to. A warning with a phone number IS the scam.

1 How it works

1

A popup takes over the screen

Sirens, robotic voices, flashing warnings: "Your computer is infected! Call Microsoft: 1-800-XXX-XXXX. Do not shut down!" It's just a webpage.

⬇️
2

You call, they act official

"Microsoft certified technician." They ask to connect remotely with AnyDesk or TeamViewer to "diagnose."

⬇️
3

They fake a problem, then charge you

Scary-looking (normal) system screens, then hundreds of dollars to fix nothing. With remote access, they may also grab banking logins or install backdoors.

⬇️
4

The worst version: the refund call

Later they call "to refund you," "accidentally" overpay, and beg you to wire back the difference. That's how retirement accounts vanish.

2 Red flags

🚩
Any virus warning with a phone number in it.
🚩
A caller claiming to be Microsoft, Windows, McAfee, or "your computer company."
🚩
Anyone asking to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or any remote program.
🚩
Payment by gift cards, wire, Zelle, or crypto. No real company collects that way.
🚩
"Don't tell your bank what this is for." Run.

3 Protect yourself

Close it: Ctrl+W, or Ctrl+Alt+Del → Task Manager → end the browser. The "infection" is gone because it never existed.

Hang up on tech support callers. Every single one is fake.

Never let a stranger remote into your computer.

Have a local number you trust (that's us) so panic has somewhere safe to go.

4 Already happened? Do this now

  1. Hang up and disconnect the computer from the internet.
  2. If they connected remotely: get the machine professionally cleaned before using it for banking.
  3. Call your bank immediately if any money moved. Time matters for reversals.
  4. Change passwords from a different device.
  5. No shame. This scam is engineered by professionals and catches thousands daily.
