Fake & "Free" Software Downloads

Search "free PDF converter" and half the results are traps. Fake download sites and cracked software are a top way malware walks in the front door.

THE ONE RULE

Download software only from the maker's real website or the official app store.

Not from the first search result, not from a "downloads" site with five green DOWNLOAD buttons, and never a "free" cracked version. If you didn't type the maker's address yourself, don't trust the file.

1 How it works

1

You search for free software

PDF converters, video downloaders, Excel, games. Criminals know exactly what people search for.

⬇️
2

The top results are traps

Paid ads and copycat sites that outrank the real one, with lookalike names and logos.

⬇️
3

The installer carries a passenger

You get the program you wanted, PLUS a password stealer riding along. Cracked versions of paid software are the worst offenders.

⬇️
4

It works, so you never suspect it

The PDF converter converts PDFs. Meanwhile your passwords, browser sessions, and card numbers leave quietly.

2 Red flags

🚩
Download sites plastered with ads and multiple DOWNLOAD buttons. Which one is real? None of them.
🚩
"Free" or "cracked" versions of software that normally costs money.
🚩
An installer that asks you to turn off your antivirus. That's the malware asking permission.
🚩
Domains that are almost right: adobe-reader-download.net is not Adobe.

3 Protect yourself

Type the maker's address yourself or use the Microsoft Store / App Store.

Skip the sponsored results. Scroll to the real site below the ads.

No cracks, no keygens, ever. That goes double for kids' gaming PCs, cracked game mods are malware minefields.

Check the publisher when Windows asks "Do you want to run this?" Unknown publisher = stop.

4 Already happened? Do this now

  1. Disconnect from the internet. Don't log into anything.
  2. From another device, change your email password, then banking.
  3. Turn on two-factor authentication everywhere.
  4. Get the machine professionally cleaned. These hide well.
